요즘 해외 인터넷에서 바이러스처럼 퍼지고 있는 유행이 있다. 바로 자신의 엄지 인대를 파열시키는 법이다.

지난 7일 해외 온라인 미디어 듀드코미디에서 자신의 엄지 인대를 파열하는 멍청한 인터넷 유행을 다룬 기사가 보도됐다.

인터넷 유행 때문에 멍청하거나 이상한 시도를 하는 사람을 몇 년간 보았지만 이번 거는 아주 특별하다. 트위터에서 하나의 설명 도로 시작된 이 사진을 보고 따라 한 많은 사람들이 자신의 인대가 파열된 엄지를 다시 인터넷에 올리고 있다.

아래 사진은 심심할 경우 엄지 인대를 파열 시키는 방법이라고 나와있다.

또한 엄지손가락 모양을 아래처럼 한 뒤 손목을 반대 방향으로 구부리면 인대가 늘어난다고 한다.

On September 13th, 2015, a Mayo Clinic^[1] infographic demonstrating how to perform a Finkelstein test for Quervain’s tendonitis was posted on 9gag^[2] with the title “If you are bored – How to break your thumb ligament.”

The graphic remained relatively unknown until January 5th, 2017, when Twitter user @RahSenpai^[4] posted screenshots of a text message conversation in which a young man named Jonathan breaks his thumb by following the infographic instructions (shown below). Within five days, the tweet gained over 217,000 likes and 118,000 retweets.

 

That day, Twitter users @lfw_lm^[6] and @Meli__10^[7] replied to @Rah_Senpai with photographs of their crooked thumbs (shown below). Over the next 24 hours, other Twitter users posted similar photographs in tweets claiming to have broken their thumbs by following the instructions.

 

On January 6th, 2017, the @Dory^[5] Twitter feed reposted the screenshots. That day, BuzzFeed^[8] published an article about the tweets. On January 9th, Redditor Ragingdark submitted the Finkelstein test graphic to /r/LearnUselessTalents^[3] in a post titled “How to break your thumb ligament.” In the coming days, several news sites published articles about
